Final Cuts Are In

The final cuts are in, and they include two notable players.

The final 22 released, according to the Post-Gazette were: center Chukky Okobi, runningback Verron Haynes, defensive end Ryan McBean, guard Cameron Stephenson, wide receiver Dallas Baker, defensive end Shaun Nua, cornerback Chidi Iuwoma, fullback John Kuhn, quarterback Bryan Randall, receivers Walter Young and Gerran Walker; tight ends Cody Boyd and Jon Dekker, tackles Jason Capizzi and Brandon Torrey; nose tackle Scott Paxson, linebackers Ron Stanley and Marquis Cooper; cornerbacks Anthony Madison and Jovon Johnson; and safeties Grant Mason and Mike Lorello

I feel pretty good about these cuts. I thought Okobi would make it, but I guess they wanted to save the money. As I suspected, they kept Trash Essex and are going to try and sneak Capizzi on the practice squad. I'm very happy that Gary Russell made the squad. Overall, I hit on 50 of 53 on the final roster. I missed on Okobi, McBean, and Iuwoma, who were replaced by Marvin Philip, Rian Wallace, and Darnell Stapleton (who came out of nowhere to gain a spot. I knew about him, but I never really considered him for the roster. He missed a lot of time in camp due to injury). Not too shabby. Here is your official 53 man roster:

OFFENSE (26):

QB (3): Ben Roethlisberger, Charlie Batch, Brian St. Pierre

RB/FB (5): Willie Parker, Najeh Davenport, Gary Russell, Dan Krieder, Carey Davis

WR (5): Hines Ward, Santonio Holmes, Nate Washington, Cedrick Wilson, Willie Reid

TE (3): Heath Miller, Matt Spaeth, Jerame Tuman

OT (4): Marvel Smith, Willie Colon, Max Starks, Trai Essex

OG (4): Alan Faneca, Kendall Simmons, Chris Kemoeatu, Darnell Stapleton

C (2): Sean Mahan, Marvin Philip

DEFENSE (24):

DE (4): Aaron Smith, Brett Keisel, Travis Kirschke, Nick Eason

DT (2): Casey Hampton, Chris Hoke

LB (9): James Harrison, James Farrior, Larry Foote, Clark Haggans, LaMarr Woodley, Lawrence Timmons, Arnold Harrison, Clint Kriewaldt, Rian Wallace

CB (5): Ike Taylor, Deshea Townsend, Bryant McFadden, Ricardo Colclough, William Gay

S (4): Troy Polamalu, Anthony Smith, Ryan Clark, Tyrone Carter

SPECIAL TEAMS (3): Jeff Reed, Daniel Sepulveda, Greg Warren

Well, we knew 48 or so roster spots were locks, the only question was what they were going to do with the last 5 spots. So we're not talking about any starters, just backups and prospects with potential for the future.

Hopefully they can get Capizzi on the practice squad, otherwise it might be a mistake not keeping him instead of Essex.

Also, I'm surprised they kept Goo Wallace instead of a sixth CB/special teams madman like Chidi, Madison, or Johnson.

Hopefully the decision to release Okobi was made because they felt Mahan was a better center, not because they felt obligated to go with Mahan just because they signed him as a free agent. Chukky certainly didn't help his case any with all his pouting, maybe he's been hanging around Faneca too much.

Guys did you see that the Steelers got Alan Rossum from the Falcons? I wonder if that means the end of Willie Reid or will that mean Coclough is gone?

I did just see that. I want to write about it, but I am going out and I am on sports overload right now. Get ready for a lot of psots tomorrow/monday. The US Open was fantastic today, college football was quite satisfying (if you hate ND like I do and love big upsets), the Steelers made a very, VERY interesting trade, and my sleeper pick cut their QB. Many posts to come.

Also, so much for all the panic over the Steelers not drafting a RB, considering Russell AND Davis both made the team.

And so much for all the panic over Kreider possibly being cut.

I don't know what to make of the Rossum trade, does this mean that Willie Reid will only be used as a WR?

How funny will it be if the O-line for the 2008 Arizona Cardinals is Brown-Faneca-Okobi-Philip-Starks?
