Borrowing from the media’s name for the National League Central, the Comedy Central Report is a daily feature which recaps all the previous day’s games in which a central team played. Keep track of all six teams vying for the most mediocre division title in baseball.
Pirates defeat Mariners 5-3
Recap: An error by Richie Sexson in the first would provide the Pirates with an early 2 runs that would eventually be the difference in the game. Gorzo continues his strong year by going 7 innings and only allowing 2 runs, while striking out a season high 6 batters. The bullpen barely held together, but got the job done.
All You Need to Know: Gorzelanny had another season high: 123 pitches. This is the fourth time he's had 110 pitches or more, and while he's a young kid, I can't help but wonder if he'll tire out near the end of the season. Then again, with our bullpen, I think I may have done the same thing.
Brewers stay on a roll, beat Giants 6-2
Recap: Ben Sheets threw a complete game and Prince Fielder added three more RBIs. Bonds again was held without a homer.
All You Need to Know: Even with this small minisurge by the Bucs, it seems like the window provided by the Brewers when they went 10-20 from May 11 to June 12th has officially been closed.
Cubs squeak out win over Rangers 5-4
Recap: Sammy Sosa couldn't hit number 600 in the first game of the series against his old team, but he has something to say to all you naysayers who don't believe he will hit it this series: "I'm not a guy that's going to go out there and swing like a girl." He would also like you to know that he does not have cooties and contrary to reports he was not holding hands with Joanna near the swing set during recess.
All You Need to Know: The Cubs continue to quietly put together a small surge as well. But they're the Cubs, so no worries.
Cardinals beat Royals, 5-1
Recap: Brad Thompson fills in for a bullpen-relegated Kip Wells and pitches 7 solid innings and a streaking Chris Duncan added a homerun and 3 RBIs.
Cardinals Stat of the Day: It hurts when you see Oliver Perez doing well for the Mets, but at least you can take solace in the fact that Kip never panned out. This year he's gone 2-11 with a 6.93 ERA. Suddenly, I don't feel so weird about giving Duke more time in the rotation.
Astros halt Angels, 9-5
Recap: Craig Biggio moved to within 8 hits of the 3000 hit club while Carlos Lee and Hunter Pence provided the offense for the win
All You Need to Know: The Stanley Cup was there!
Reds Answer A's, win 5-2
Recap: Homer Bailey and Griffey Jr. helped the Reds to take a 1.5 game lead over the cellar-dwelling Rangers.
All You Need to Know: With the Red's victory, all the Central Division teams won. Not only that, but 4 out of the 6 wins were against West Coast teams. East coast bias? Pssh.
